Cycling NWT proudly celebrates the success of Yellowknife’s selection for the prestigious Healthy Urban Policy Workshop in Helsinki, hosted by 8 80 Cities in partnership with the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).
Alongside teams from Kingston, Burlington, and Hamilton, Yellowknife was chosen to take part in a five-day immersive workshop this May focused on building healthier, more active, and inclusive communities. Representing the North will be the Institute of Circumpolar Health Research, guiding the City of Yellowknife toward the development of a Healthy Community Plan centered around active mobility and four-season design standards.
This opportunity will allow local leaders and health researchers to learn directly from Helsinki—one of the healthiest and most walkable cities in the world. The experience will inform the City of Yellowknife’s Master Transportation Plan and help bring stakeholders together to identify and implement effective active transportation strategies in a northern context.
At Cycling NWT, we are excited about what this means for the future of active transportation in the territory. As our communities embrace cycling and walking year-round, this initiative marks a major step toward safer, healthier, and more inclusive northern mobility for all.
