After two exciting road races launched the 2025 Territorial Cycling Series, it was time to shift gears, and trails, for a brand new milestone: the first Territorial Mountain Bike Championship Race in the Northwest Territories.
Held on Sunday, May 25th at the rugged and scenic Tin Can Hill in Yellowknife, this historic race marked Race #1 of 4 in the MTB series that will determine champions in the U19 and 19+ categories. The trails were muddy, technical, and challenging, but the atmosphere was electric.
Arlene Cliffe-Phillips, winner of the women’s race, captured the spirit of the day:
“It feels pretty good. I know we’ve had some unofficial races before, but to finally win the first official one feels really sweet. The training over the last few weeks definitely paid off.”
Lisa McShane, race organizer and racer, reflected on the energy:
“No rain, a little bit of sun, and mostly dry trails. We’re seeing growing numbers and had an amazing time here on Tin Can Hill. It was great to see it all come together.”
Joe Curran, winner of the Open event.
“Because I love the sport, I love my friends, and I want to support the community.”
