It’s with mixed emotions that we share some news: Cycling NWT will not be part of Team NT at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
We’re of course deeply disappointed. Over the past year, we’ve poured our energy into building a cycling community, engaging athletes, training coaches, running our first-ever races, and dreaming big about what’s possible. We believed in our team, and we still do.
As shared by Rita Mercredi, Chef de Mission for Team NT, the Host Society and Canada Games Council confirmed they will not be approving any increases to team size for the 2025 Games. This decision impacted multiple contingents across the country, not just Cycling NWT. Our request, while backed by a passionate community, came after team sizes and budgets were finalized, and unfortunately, the window to be added had already closed.
That said, we are grateful. Grateful for the support of those who championed our inclusion. Grateful for the athletes and coaches who showed up ready. And grateful to Rita and Sport North for encouraging us to keep this momentum going toward future Games.
This is not the end of the road, just a detour. Our athletes are still racing. Our coaches are still guiding. And our team is still growing.
When Team NT takes the stage this summer, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines with full hearts, proud of our Territory, and proud of the incredible work happening across all sports.
We’re building something strong here. And we’re not done yet. #TeamNT #CyclingNWT #KeepRiding #CanadaGames #weareallteamnt
