YELLOWKNIFE — Following the success of this year’s YK2HR event, Cycling NWT is inviting residents to keep the momentum rolling with a series of weekend road rides designed to bring people together on two wheels.
The weekly rides are open to cyclists of varying abilities and aim to create a welcoming environment where participants can improve their riding skills, stay active, and connect with others who share a passion for cycling.
“We saw incredible enthusiasm during YK2HR, and we wanted to build on that energy,” said Chris Bruckner of Cycling NWT. “These rides are about much more than training—they’re about creating a community where everyone feels welcome, regardless of experience.”
Each ride emphasizes safe group riding, encouragement, and inclusivity. Whether someone is preparing for their first organized ride or training for competition, organizers hope riders will find a place within the growing cycling community.
A highlight of every outing is the mid-ride café stop, which has quickly become a favourite tradition. Riders take time to enjoy a coffee, share stories from the road, and get to know one another before continuing the ride home.
“Some of the best parts of cycling happen when the pace slows down,” Bruckner said. “The café stop gives people an opportunity to connect, welcome new riders, and build friendships that extend beyond the bike.”
Cycling NWT believes these social rides play an important role in promoting both physical and mental well-being while strengthening the local cycling culture. By making the rides accessible and enjoyable, the organization hopes to encourage more people to discover the benefits of riding in a supportive group environment.
The season will culminate with the Northwest Territories Mountain Bike and Road Cycling Territorial Championships, taking place in Yellowknife on August 22 and 23. Cyclists from across the territory are expected to compete in a weekend showcasing endurance, strategy, and athleticism.
Further details on race formats, registration, and volunteer opportunities will be announced in the coming weeks.
As interest in cycling continues to grow across the North, Cycling NWT hopes the weekend rides will inspire even more residents to dust off their bikes, join the peloton, and experience firsthand the friendships and sense of belonging that cycling can create.
Weekend ride information, including meeting locations and start times, is shared through Cycling NWT’s social media channels. New riders are always welcome.
